Privacy

What this blog collects, which cookies it uses, and how to change your choice.

Analytics

This blog uses Google Analytics 4 to count page views and see, in general terms, where visitors come from and which devices they use. It doesn’t use analytics for advertising, and it doesn’t share analytics data with anyone else.

Google Analytics only sets cookies if you choose Accept analytics in the cookie banner. Until then, it runs in Google’s Consent Mode with analytics storage turned off: it sets no cookies and sends Google only basic, cookieless signals that a page was visited.

Cookies

Cookie Set by Purpose Lasts
cc_cookie This site Remembers your cookie choice 6 months
_ga, _ga_* Google Analytics, only if you accept Distinguishes visitors and sessions for analytics Up to 2 years

You can change your choice at any time with the Cookie settings link at the bottom of every page. If you withdraw consent, the analytics cookies are removed.

Light and dark mode

If you choose Light or Dark at the top of any page, your browser remembers the choice in its local storage, under the name theme. It isn’t a cookie: it stays on your device and is never sent to this site or anyone else. If you never choose, nothing is stored and the site follows your device’s light or dark setting.

Search runs entirely in your browser. What you type isn’t sent anywhere.

Embedded content

Videos are embedded from YouTube in privacy-enhanced mode (youtube-nocookie.com) and from Vimeo with “do not track” turned on. Neither sets cookies until you play a video. Some older posts show photos hosted on Flickr, which loads them from Flickr’s servers.

Comments and replies

Some posts show replies from Mastodon and Bluesky. Nothing is loaded from either network until you choose Show replies. Then your browser fetches the public replies directly from the Mastodon server (aus.social) and from Bluesky’s public API, along with the repliers’ profile pictures, so those services see your IP address. Replies are public posts on those networks; to remove one, delete it there.

Comments on older posts were left on the original WordPress blog. Only the commenter’s name, website and comment are shown; email and IP addresses weren’t carried over. If you’d like a comment of yours removed, please get in touch.

Hosting and fonts

The blog is hosted on GitHub Pages, which logs visitor IP addresses for security purposes. Fonts are served from this site, not from Google Fonts.
